Goreme Open Air Museum

Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Goreme Open Air Museum is a unique complex of Byzantine-era rock churches, monasteries, and chapels adorned with frescoes.

UNESCO World Heritage

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, the Goreme Open Air Museum is the most visited tourist attraction in Cappadocia. The museum is located 1 km east of the town of Goreme and houses dozens of rock churches, monasteries, and chapels across an area of approximately 30,000 square meters. These structures were carved and decorated with frescoes by Byzantine monks between the 10th and 12th centuries.

Notable Churches

Among the most remarkable structures in the museum are the Dark Church, Tokali Church, Elmali Church, Yilanli Church, and Barbara Church. The Dark Church, which preserves its frescoes best thanks to its structure that receives little light, can be visited with a separate ticket. Tokali Church is the largest church in the museum, and its walls covered with biblical scenes are particularly noteworthy.
