Agzikarahan Caravanserai
Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat I
Architectural Features
Agzikarahan consists of two sections: open and covered. Its crown gate displays one of the finest examples of Seljuk stonework. The portal, adorned with geometric and floral motifs, reflects the artistic sensibility of the era. Inside, the high-vaulted covered section is the main structure that housed merchants and animals during winter.
Historical Significance
Located on the Aksaray-Nevsehir road, the caravanserai was a critical stop in Silk Road trade. Merchants could receive free accommodation, meals, and veterinary services for up to three days. The structure demonstrates the importance the Seljuk state placed on trade security.
