Whirling Dervish Ceremonies
Saruhan Caravanserai is best known today for its whirling dervish ceremonies. The Mevlevi sema rituals held in the restored historic venue offer visitors a mystical experience. The acoustic properties of the caravanserai create a perfect environment for sema music.
Structure and Location
Located about 5 km outside Avanos, Saruhan follows the typical Seljuk caravanserai plan. It was designed with an open courtyard and a covered hall to meet the needs of merchants. Today it has gained a new function by hosting cultural events.
