Formation of the Canyon

Ihlara Valley was formed by the erosion of tuff rocks -- created by volcanic eruptions of Mount Hasan -- by the Melendiz River over thousands of years. The canyon reaches depths of 100-150 meters in places, and hundreds of rock churches, monasteries, and living spaces were carved along its walls. The valley is covered with rich vegetation and plane trees.

Byzantine Churches

There are more than 100 rock churches in the valley. Among the most important are Agacalti Church (Daniel Pantonassa), Sumbullu Church, Yilanli Church, and Kokar Church. The frescoes in these churches date from the 6th to 13th centuries and are among the best-preserved examples of early Christian art.
