Historical Significance

Kaymakli is one of the most important underground cities alongside Derinkuyu. A 9-kilometer tunnel is known to connect the two cities. With a history dating back to the Hittite period, it served as a shelter for thousands of years. Its carving into multi-colored tufa rock distinguishes it from other underground cities.

Structural Layout

The open levels of Kaymakli contain stables, wine and oil presses, kitchens, storage rooms, and a church. Its labyrinthine corridors and rooms were deliberately designed to be narrow and complex to facilitate defense during enemy attacks. Due to visitor density, early morning visits are recommended.
