History
Mazi (ancient name Mataza) is a historic settlement located southwest of Urgup. The underground city was actively used during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Its large storage areas indicate the city was designed to withstand prolonged sieges.
Structure and Spaces
The most notable feature of Mazi is its large storage rooms. The grain silos, water cisterns, and wine cellars are remarkably spacious. The tunnel system at the city entrance and ventilation shafts are well-preserved. Away from tourist crowds, it offers an authentic experience.
