Rock Churches

The Byzantine period is Cappadocia's most brilliant era. Hundreds of rock churches, monasteries, and chapels were carved in the region. The frescoed churches in the Goreme Open Air Museum are among the most valuable works of this period. During the Iconoclasm period, non-figurative decorations were created, followed by magnificent frescoes.

Underground Cities

During the Byzantine period, underground cities were expanded and used as shelters against Arab raids. Multi-story underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymakli reached a capacity to shelter thousands of people.
