UNESCO and Conservation
In 1985, Goreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. This was an important milestone for the preservation and promotion of the region. Archaeological excavations and restoration work intensified.
Tourism Boom
From the 1990s onwards, Cappadocia took its place on the international tourism scene. Hot air balloon tours, which started in 1997, became the symbol of the region. Boutique hotels, cave hotels, and gastronomy tourism became the cornerstones of the regional economy.
